Daryl and Joel's Pond

Smack in the middle of our front yard is a 25,000 gallon koi pond. In order to get to our front door you must walk over a bridge where you can gaze down and observe the fish, fountains, and water lilies.

There is always feeding frenzy whenever food is tossed into the pond. Every fish comes up to get their share of the pellets. They always act like they haven't been fed in weeks, even though they are fed daily.
Feeding time Feeding time

Mrs. Keen, our neighbor from across the street, feeds the fish for us.

We used to feed them regulation koi food, but we found that catfish food was a lot less expensive, and you could buy it in larger quantities.

Regular fertilization encourages the water lilies to bloom. We have white and yellow varieties (pictured below), plus red and purple. Last year we purchased an expensive "Queen of Siam" water lily, but the poor queen didn't make it.

Potted plants surround the pond. Daryl has rigged up the sprinkler system so that small tubes water the pots regularly. The verbena and radiation lantana do especially well in the Texas heat if they are kept watered.

Dragon Fly The pond also attracts airborne critters such as dragonflies (one is pictured at left), butterflies, and bees.

In keeping with the tropical theme, we have recently been adding palm trees to the yard. The one in front of the house (pictured) is by far the largest.

During the day we often have people stopping by to take a closer look. Theirs is a real experience -- yours now is just a virtual experience.

Night time water show
In the evening the light show begins.

One can almost imagine Liberace playing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto #1 in B Flat Minor as the dancing waters crescendo and decrescendo along with the music.

That's all for now. The Home button will take you back to our home web page. For you Virtual Pond Tour folks, thanks for coming by!
